Luna's Sokjan (Book one) (16 page)

I drew closer to him
inhaling his scent and running my free hand up his chest. My other
hand held my coffee cup between us. Coffee and a Milky Way was
there a better way to spend the afternoon? I was almost at peace
with the world. Now if I could only get away.

“Did you need something?”
I purred up at him.

He kissed me, slow and
lazy with all the time in the world.

“Well, I’m glad I could
help.” I said when we broke away.

That’s when I noticed that
his other hand was on my hip near the pocket that hid my Milky Way.
Taking his hand in mine and off my hip, I inched back away from
him.

“I have found something
that needs your explanation
.
” He said to me.

I stared at him blankly.
Did he know?

“What is it?” I questioned
innocently.

He turned and led me to
his large oak desk. Angus, Sam, and some other people I didn’t know
where working in the room. Following Gabriel’s instructions per
pack etiquette, I said, “Hello” to everybody as we walked by. He
sat down and opened a fat file. I leaned my butt against the desk,
giving my back to the room and sipped my coffee. While I waited for
Gabriel to tell me what he wanted with me. I gazed dreamily out the
window thinking about stretching out on the roof in the warm sun
and eating my candy bar.

“Where did you get this?”
He finally asked.

I looked down at the desk
into the open file Adam had given me two years ago, after I had
first moved to Fall Branch. It contained all known information
about Gabriel and his pack. I turned slightly, so I could see the
file better. I set the coffee cup down as I scanned the data
quickly. I had forgotten most of the information it contained, but
I had never forgotten the pack’s territory lines.

“That’s not my favorite
picture of you. Turn the page.” I instructed him.

The first picture was of
him dressed in a tailor made black suit and he was walking into a
building somewhere downtown. He turned the page. The following
picture was of him out doors in jeans and a dark green polo shirt,
probably here. He was staring at something intently in the woods,
and I always wondered what it was.

“What are you looking at?”
I asked him
,
leaning closer to look at the picture with him. “I always
wondered.”

Pulling the candy bar from
my pocket, I turned back around. Once again giving my back to the
room and focused on opening it.

“I don’t know. When was it
taken?” He asked.

I
shrugged
,
breaking off a piece of candy, “Sometime in the spring, a few
years ago, I think.”

I placed the bite in my
mouth and closed my eyes, heaven. I don’t remember when my love
affair first started with the Milky Way, but I had fallen in love
from the first bite. I kept them in the freezer at home waiting for
the right time to be eaten.

“McKenna!” Gabriel’s voice
was harsh.

“What?” I growled
back.

“Where did you get this?”
He demanded.

I observed
him
,
as I broke
off another piece of candy.

“Did you ever wonder why
we never met before now?” I asked, popping the candy in my mouth
and eyeing him thoughtfully as I chewed.

“I admit it did cross my
mind.” He agreed.

“If you read through the
file you’ll see it lists all of your known businesses, locations of
homes and other personal stuff. I've known for the past two years
where your territory lines began and ended. I avoided that area
very carefully. Well except for the other night.” I told him. “I
have files on all the other Alphas and vampires in the city as
well.”

A thought struck me about
the land lines, and I started to push away from the desk. When I
suddenly found myself pinned against the desk by a well-muscled
arm, I glanced over at Gabriel with a confused
expression.

“You have files on all the
Alphas and vampires in the city?” He asked in an anger laced voice.
“How did you get this information, McKenna?”

“Look, I have a friend and
that’s what he does, gathers information on people. It takes
information to do what I do Gabriel, besides most of the
information is public record stuff, I checked.” I told him eating
more candy.

“He?” his voice went
deadly cold.

“Really? I did have a life
before we met. I have sources and contacts that I use regularly,
and yes a lot of them are men. There aren’t a lot of females in
this line of work.” I narrowed my eyes at him, “And just where did
you get your information on me? I’m not that easy to find, but yet
you knew where I lived. Didn’t think I’d notice, huh?”

“Angus gave me your
mother’s name, and I had my computer guys track you
down.”

“Ah, I did the same
thing.”

“Mine didn’t have PI
quality pictures.” He commented.

His cheek muscle
twitched.

“My guy’s better.” I said
and absent mindedly touched his cheek.

“I want his name.” He
demanded
.

“Well, you can’t have it.”
I shot back.

It was Alpha staring time
again. I straightened up and stared back at him.

“Get out!” He
roared.

The order was given in
Gabriel’s Alpha voice. I heard the room clear, and the door close.
Apparently we were going to have another talk, oh goody.

Gabriel sat back in his
chair thinking about what he was going to say.

“As my mate,” he began. “I
allow you certain freedoms.” I snorted. He glared at me. “You will
tell me this man’s name McKenna.”

“You won’t intimidate me
you know. I grew up with Angus, and before him, there was my Alpha
father.”

I said.

“Are you challenging me?”
He said in his ‘I am the Alpha’ voice.

“No just trying to be
honest with you.” I said in my “whatever” voice, “Why is this so
important to you? Did it hurt your pride that he was able to get so
much information on you?”

All reasonable questions
to my mind, I ate some more candy watching him
.

“I am part of your life
now. I want to know the people that are vital to you and which ones
are not. I want to know how you met them. How often you work
together. Did you date any of them?” He countered.

“Are they a threat to you
and your people. “ I returned. “Honestly, Gabriel with the life I
lead. I never know from one day to the next when or where I will
get “the call to service” and you want to know who I’ve dated.” I
laughed out loud. “This is too much. You’re the longest
relationship that I have ever had and we been together what a week?
Oh I had lovers, but nothing this complicated before.” I shook my
head.

“How many lovers did you
have? Don’t you want to know many lovers I’ve had?” He questioned
me
.

“No not really. We’re
bound to each other until one of us dies. So
,
if you think, you want to move on
to another woman,” I shrugged,” I’d kill her and then spend the
rest of my life making you regret it. I may not be able to kill
you, but that doesn’t mean I can’t cause you plenty of
pain.”

I ate another bit of candy
and watched him think over what I had told him.

If I could keep Gabriel
distracted, maybe he would forget about Adam.

He smiled, “And the same
applies to you, dear mate and now you will tell me this man’s
name.”

So much for plan A, moving
on to plan B.

“I met Adam eight years
ago. He was gathering information on me. We worked out a business
arrangement and we have worked together ever since.” I
shrugged.

It wasn’t an actual lie. I
had met Adam eight years ago, when he broke into my apartment. I
was at home at the time and we had a long talk. In which I learned
that Adam was a wererat and a master spy, but not a proper fighter.
We soon came to a workable agreement. He would supply me with
information at a fair price, and I wouldn’t kill him. We did hang
out together from time to time. Next to Ted, Adam was the only real
friend I had and I wasn’t going to let Gabriel change
that.

“Are you happy now?” I
asked him.

I ate another bite of
candy.

He grabbed what was left
of my candy bar and ate it. I narrowed my eyes at him. Oh, he would
pay. I didn’t know how or when, but he would pay for
that
.

“No last name?” He asked
still chewing my candy bar.

“Nope, we like to keep it
simple. Are we done?” I asked him and started licking the melted
chocolate from my fingers.

Gabriel wrapped a hand
around my waist and pulled me down into his lap. I watched in
fascination as he licked my finger. He slowly sucked on it, before
moving on to another chocolate coated finger. It was so sexy that I
closed my eyes and let the waves of passion drown me.

“All I want to do is touch
you when you’re near, and when you’re not around. All I want to do
is find you, so I can touch you.” He whispered against the skin of
my neck.

“I feel the same way.” My
confession was quietly given.

His hand moved under my
shirt, coming to rest just under my breast.

“After we find this
killer, you and I are going to take a trip, a honeymoon if you
will.” He promised me.

Our eyes met. My hands
cupped his face.

“I will go anywhere you
want.” We kissed long and slow, before he carried me upstairs to
our rooms and we spent the rest of the afternoon making love to
each other.

Chapter 11

A knock echoed through the
room. I laid my head on the computer. You just couldn’t get
anything done living here. I should pack my bag and just go back to
my house. This was the third interruption since Gabriel left. The
first one was a middle-age woman who wanted to know what I wanted
for dinner.

“Go ask Gabriel.” I told
her, we were standing in the doorway.

“The Alpha’s not here.”
She told me primly.

“Where the hell is he?” I
asked her.

“I don’t know. I work in
the kitchen, not security.” She told me primly
.

I studied Sarah's five
foot ten-inch frame with blond hair, and green eyes. She had a
decent build. She might be beneficial in a fight.

“Do you like working in
the kitchens?” I asked.

“It’s my job.” She sniffed
at me.

So you don’t like working
in the kitchen.

“What’s your name?” I
asked.

“Do you always interrogate
everyone you meet?” she countered, I just stared at her.

“I’m Sarah.” She finally
answered with a sigh.

“No, normally people leave
me the hell alone.” I rubbed at my temple. A headache was starting,
just behind my eyes. “Just order pizza, whatever Gabriel
likes.”

She nodded and
left.

Why did some people have
to be told to do everything? I wondered
,
going back to my computer. I had
just finished placing my order on Amazon when another knock echoed
through the room.

I opened the door, Sarah
again.

“How many pizzas do you
want?” She asked.

Really???

“How many do you normally
order?” I countered.

“I have never ordered
pizza for the house, so I don’t know.” She answered

That got my
attention.

“How many people are you
feeding?” I wanted to know.

“Twelve.” I left her
standing at the door, found my wallet and counted out the money in
it.

“Here’s a hundred dollars,
order whatever that will buy. If that’s not
enough
,
charge
the damn things to Gabriel’s credit card.” I closed the door in her
face.

I pressed my head against
the door. What did I know about ordering enough food for twelve
people?

Whatever, back to
work.

That was an hour ago, and
I was still being bothered. If, I just killed whoever it was. Then
I could leave the body hanging on the wall. Maybe that would scare
off anyone else from bothering me tonight. No, Gabriel would get
mad, I sighed.

“What!” I barked at the
door.

How did anyone work around
here?

“Sarah asked us to bring
this pizza up to you.” Jennifer’s voice said through the
door.

What a pleasant surprise.
The puppies where here, not only were they fun to be around, but I
bet I could get them to help me.

“Come in.” They trooped in
carrying six pizza boxes and bottles of drinks.

The smell was heavenly.
Meat, cheese, and veggies made my mouth water
.
I had forgotten to eat
lunch.
