“Don’t start me crying again,”
Mom sniffed, shooing me away with her hands.

I ran down the stairs and raced
into her room to find her sitting up in her toddler bed, her large blue eyes
still sleepy looking. She often startled herself awake.

“Momma,” she cried, holding out
her arms as she broke into a smile as big as the one I was sporting.

“Hello, gorgeous girl. Mommy’s
missed you so much while you were sleeping.” I gathered her up in my arms,
kissing the little roll of fat around the back of her neck. I was sure if I’d
carried her to term myself, I couldn’t have loved her more. “Let’s get you
changed and dressed, and you can come and see Daddy, Grandpa, and Chase playing
outside.”

I laughed when she clapped her
hands, then rubbed her eyes and yawned, trying to shake off her sleepiness. I
took her over to her changing table to put a new diaper on her, then dressed
her in a pair of denim overalls, with a blue and white striped long-sleeve tee
and matching socks, topped off with a blue knitted beanie hat with a flower on
it. I opened the sliding doors out onto the backyard and carried her out, with
her holding on to my shoulder with one hand. Chase was using his machine,
swinging at the balls it was automatically dropping for him, Pops and Nate
bending over in “the field” shouting words of encouragement. Nate saw us
watching and jogged over, beaming.

“Hello, my beautiful girl. Do you
have a kiss for Daddy, Reid?” he asked. She nodded and held out her arms for
him to take her. My heart melted to see him with either of them, he was so
gentle and loving. And I also loved how he could flip on a dime with me, be raw
and sexually aggressive.

“Ball, Dada,” she squealed, clinging
to his long-sleeved top with one hand while pointing over to where her brother
was playing, her face full of joy to see him. Nate chuckled and slipped his arm
around my waist, and I rested my head on his shoulder as we stood watching,
listening to Chase and Pops laughing.

“He’ll do it,” Nate said quietly.

“Do what?”

“Live my baseball dream. Look at
the way he’s already hitting those balls. I’ll see what he’s like when we try
pitching together when he’s older. He’s going to be a superstar one day, and
I’m going to help him get there.”

“You know it’s also ok if he
decides he wants to be a sexy superstar car mechanic like his dad. And who’s to
say that Reid won’t take up baseball, too? Women’s sports are becoming bigger
and bigger. Anyway, as long as both of them are happy, I don’t care what they
do.”

“No, I guess I don’t either, but
a small part of me really hopes he’ll make it, fulfill my dreams, as well as my
dad’s.” He smiled down at me and sighed. “I guess being a sexy superstar car
mechanic isn’t all that bad. I got the girl of my dreams this way, didn’t I?” he
asked, his eyes sparkling with love as I smiled up at him, inhaling sharply as
I did. He still took my breath away, even after all of this time.

“I sure hope so, because it’s too
late for you to change your mind now, Ace.”

“Never. Nothing was able to tear
us apart, Sky, and nothing ever will. We’re too strong to let it. Besides,
there’s the small matter of me still being crazily in love with you, baby,” he
murmured against my lips.

“Tell me about it,” I sighed,
parting mine to let him kiss me deeply, waking up those fireflies in my stomach
that only he had ever set alight. And only he ever would. My days of being torn
were well and truly behind me.

Two
couples, Lulu and Luc Le Grand and their firm friends, Coco Barrella and Hunter

on Christmas Eve.

Will
the calm marital waters of the seemingly perfect Le Grand’s relationship become
choppy when they risk not making it home to their children for Christmas Day?

And
