elcome to Rosenberg, where everyone is safe and free from the infection.
Yeah right. There was something hidden in this oh so perfect little town.
It only took me a week to figure that something was off.
“Why don’t you come with me tonight, Babe?” Jessie tries to talk to me for the hundredth time since I had found out the secret he had kept from me.
I still couldn’t believe the man behind the mask had been Gale.
He had been right there in the other room the entire time.
We could have escaped together but no one had said a word to me about him even being there, they had kept me clueless.
Jessie sighs roughly as he sits down on the edge of the bed. “Please, talk to me. I know you’re still angry but like I told you before Gale didn’t want us to say anything to you.”
“You still should have told me.” I clip out.
“I know and I’m sorry that I didn’t.” He replies softly as his eyes plead for me to forgive him.
Just as I’m about to tell him that I was going to forgive him a wave a sickness washes over me forcing me to stand up and rush into the bathroom connected to our bedroom.
I heave into the toilet as Jessie holds my hair back while rubbing my back trying to sooth me.
We had done this for the past three days.
“Maybe you should get checked out, Babe.” Jessie states gently over my shoulder as I lean back on my knees.
Handing me a cloth to wipe my mouth I nod up at him. “I think you’re right. Something definitely isn’t right.”
After a few more minutes of dry heaving I finally stand to my feet feeling terrible, but wanting to figure out what could possibly be wrong with me.
Wrapping his arm around me Jessie leads me out of the small apartment that we shared and down stairs to the door that led outside.
I shield my eyes from the bright sunlight as he guides me down the quiet roads and towards the large hospital that was just a few blocks away.
“We’re almost there, Babe.” Jessie reassures as we round the block and the building comes into view.
Honestly I wanted to stop and throw up again but I force one foot in front of the other as we continue on.
What was left of my breakfast was being rather difficult to keep down though.
Thankfully as we walk into the front doors I’m able to overcome my small battle and force a friendly smile as a woman dressed in white with matching white hair and a friendly smile greets me.
“What’s wrong, Sweetheart?” She questions softly with a southern accent as she places her hand to my forehead.
“She’s been throwing up the past few days for no reason.” Jessie answers for me.
Her brow rises in question as she glances between Jessie and me for a moment before she turns and motions for us to follow her.
“Follow me and we will get you settled in a room until the doctor can examine you.” She states as she leads us into a small room and pats a bed for me lie down on.
Looking between Jessie and me once more she opens her mouth to speak. “Are you two a couple?” She inquires.
Jessie and I both nod.
“Is it possible that you’re pregnant, Sweetheart?” She asks next focusing on me.
My eyes go wide with sudden fear and I look to Jessie for his reaction.
Whereas I was nothing but scared he had a huge grin on his face. “That is a possibility, Ma’am.”
She nods with a smile. “Alright then, I’ll have the doctor come in and check things out for you.” And then she disappears out the door.
My mind whirls around every possible scenario of having a child.
I was too young for this, and I wasn’t even sure if I was ready for this to happen, and in this place of all places. Then again this was the best place to be in order to have a child.
That didn’t mean I liked the circumstances any better though.
Tears build in my eyes and slowly begin streaming down my cheeks.
“Hey, Babe, what’s wrong?” Jessie questions softly as he moves next to me on the bed while pulling me into his arms.
“I don’t want to be pregnant.” I confess.
“Why not, having a kid together will be amazing.” He argues lightly.
I shake my head. “We haven’t even been together that long, Jessie. I didn’t exactly see myself having a baby in this place either.”
He sighs roughly as he pulls away and cups my cheeks in his hands. His thumbs wipe away my tears. “We don’t even know if you’re really pregnant, but if you are we can make it through this.”
I nod even though my tears continue to fall.
A few minutes later a familiar doctor in a white lab coat enters the room and sighs softly seeing my tears. “This isn’t all that bad, River. Having a baby here is a wonderful thing. Here when women get pregnant they are given anything and everything they could possibly need.”
He had been the same doctor that had overlooked our care when we had first walked into Rosenberg.
He was pretty much assigned to us until the day we died.
“I can’t see this as being any good, Mr. Laken.” I reply with a hiccup.
He shakes his head. “This will open up many doors for you and Jessie, River.”
Sighing roughly again as I shake my head he turns to open some drawers. “Let’s just see if that’s even what we are dealing with first, okay.”
He then turns back around with a cup. “I need you to use this to collect a sample of your pee so we can test it.”
He hands me the cup and helps me to my feet before leading me down the hall to a small sterile bathroom.
Walking in I shut the door and do what needs to be done before walking back out.
Placing the cup on a tray the doctor leads me back to my room where he motions for me to lie back on the bed with Jessie.
We watch as he moves around the room.
Minutes tick by slowly as we wait to hear the results.
When the doctor turns around to face us with a smile, I had my answer and I instantly burst into tears once again.
“She’s pregnant, Jessie.” He sighs. “The next step we need to take is to gather a blood sample from the two of you so we can predict the future for this baby.”
Jessie pulls away from me for a moment. “What do you mean by that?”
“We have to check to see if the baby will be infected before it’s even born.” The doctor answers honestly.
My tears quickly get cut off as my heart sinks into an even deeper fear.
“What would happen if it is infected?” Jessie asks next.
“We would end the pregnancy. If we left it alone the baby would eat her from the inside out.” He answers Jessie’s question.
“Oh…god” I whisper scared.
That was the most horrifying thing I had ever heard.
“How will the blood from both of us tell you what’s going to happen?” Jessie inquires curiously.
“One of the doctors here has been able to predict it by the amount of the infection you have in your bodies and how our immune systems fights it off.” He replies.
“I highly doubt the two of you will have any problems with having a healthy baby though. Both of you are in excellent health.” The doctor reassures.
Jessie nods as he resumes his place beside me, his arms hold me close.
Closing my eyes I listen as the doctor moves around the room for a few more minutes before he moves over towards us.
“I’ll take your blood first, Jessie.” He grunts and I open my eyes to watch as he sticks a needle into Jessie’s arm, taking three vials of blood before stopping.
Motioning for me next I hold out my arm and bury my face into Jessie’s chest.
A sharp prick stabs my arms before seconds later it’s over.
“You two can stay here while I have these samples checked, okay.” The doctor grunts before walking out the door with our samples in hand.
“This is such a mess, Jessie.” I whisper softly.
“Everything will work out, Babe.” He reassures.
I still wasn’t so certain though.
All I wanted in this moment was to somehow get back home to my bunker where it was safe and where I could be alone once more.
Being away from this situation and just away from everyone in general was beginning to sound really good about now.
Either that or being wrapped up in Zach’s arms.
God did my heart ache for him every single day.
About an hour later the doctor returns with a frown and I instantly fear the worst.
His eyes pin Jessie first. “Can I talk to River alone for a minute?” He asks.
Jessie nods and lets me go before standing to his feet to walk out of the room, shutting the door behind him reluctantly.
The doctor moves closer as he studies me for a few moments. “River, I hate to even ask this but I need to ask you for your honest truth.” He begins and pauses a moment before continuing on. “Is it possible for your child not to be Jessie’s?”
Tears build in my eyes once again as I nod.
“Alright, I don’t want you to list off whom. All I need to know was who you were with just before you came here.” He states gently.
“I was only with one other person right before I met Jessie.” I whisper.
“And what happened to him?” He asks.
I shrug. “I don’t honestly know.”
The doctor stays silent for a few moments deep in thought before speaking again. “Is there anyone who would know what happened to him?”
I nod as I grit my teeth together. “Yes, Gale, the guy who was brought in with us might know.”
His eyes widen before he nods. “Alright, I’ll see what I can find out. We need to find the father otherwise we will have no choice but to terminate the pregnancy to save you from possible death.”
With a soft pat on my leg he turns to leave the room.
Once he’s out the door Jessie returns with a raised brow.
I shake my head and stand to my feet.
I wasn’t ready to tell him what I had just learned.
He would find out soon enough.
“
A
re you ever going to let me out of here?” I groan as the doctor that had been poking and studying me walks into my room, or should I say cell.
“We can’t release you yet.” He replies.
It had been the same response I had gotten from him every day that I had asked my same question.
I wasn’t ever going to get out of here.
Sitting up on my uncomfortable bed I watch him as he places some things on a table and then turns to lean against it as he watches me for a few moments.
“Do you know the young girl that you were brought in with?” He questions abruptly.
“Do you mean River?” I ask.
He nods. “Yes, she wanted me to ask you something.”
“What does she want you to ask me?” I push.
He sighs as he pinches the bridge of his nose. “First of all she’s pregnant.” He begins.
A long string of curses fall from my lips. “I will kill him. As soon as I’m out of here I’m going to kill Jessie.”
“It’s not his.” The doctor interrupts.
He had my full attention then. “Then whose is it?”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. She doesn’t know where the father is but she had a pretty good idea that you would.” He replies.
“There are only two people I know who could be the father but your people here captured them. I doubt they’re even still alive.” I clip out.
This time the doctor curses.
“What happens if you don’t find the father?” I question worried.
He sighs roughly. “Then we will have no choice but to terminate her pregnancy which could have harmful results that could possibly result in death for her. I’d rather avoid that at all costs since we very rarely ever have a healthy child born here.”
He huffs out frustrated. “She’s a perfect specimen to carry a child.”
I move closer to him with a raised brow. “You know, don’t you?” I ask quietly.
He nods ever so slightly. “I know that she’s like you but I’m not about to say a word to anyone about it.”
“Good, she needs to be kept safe.” I reply.
He nods his head again. “If I do search for the possible father what are the names I need to look out for?” The doctor changes the subject.
“You’ll be looking for a blonde guy named Zach, or a dark haired guy named Matt. He also goes by Emmet too.” I answer.
After a few moments of awkward silence between us I ask the one question that was bothering me with this new information. “What happens if you do find the father, will you free them?”
“If all works out the way I want then she could choose between the father and Jessie. If she chooses the father then Jessie will take his place.” He answers truthfully.
I nod my head happy with his answer because there was no doubt in my mind that River would choose either Matt or Zach and that Jessie would be right in the place he needed to be in.
