Patricia Smith has an MA in Writing – Practice & Issues, and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. For many years she was a lecturer in English language/Literature. Some of her time was spent lecturing in Teacher Training in Lahore, Pakistan.

Before becoming a lecturer she was once employed as a medical secretary, nursing auxiliary, instructor on a painting and decorating programme for offenders serving Community Service Orders, and also taught English for Speakers of Other Languages in a category B prison. Since retiring from lecturing she spent a couple of years working for the Home Office in Probation hostels, one which housed lifers out on licence.

She began writing full time when she retired properly in 2006.
