1. PRESENT TENSE OF THE MODAL VERB
müssen
to have to, must

Note the irregular of
müssen,
with no
-e
ending in the first and third persons, singular.
2. THE DATIVE OR “to” CASE: NOUNS, DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLES
In the sentence: I give the man the book, the direct object is
the book
and the indirect object is
the man
, with “to” understood. Another way of saying this sentence is: I give the book
to
the man.
In German the indirect object is in the
dative
or “to” case. The direct object is of course in the
accusative
case. In the following sentences note the formation of articles and nouns in the dative case, singular and plural.
| Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. | I give the man the book. |
| Ich gebe der Frau die CD. | I give the woman the CD. |
| Ich gebe dem Kind den Ball. | I give the child the ball. |

Definite Article
Indefinite Article and
kein
a. The dative case endings of the definite and indefinite articles (and
kein)
in the singular are: masculine and neuter
, -em
; feminine
, -er
; in the plural
, -en
.
b. Nouns usually show no change in the dative singular. Most masculine and all neuter monosyllables
may
add
-e.
This form, however, is considered more and more old fashioned
.
c. The dative plural of nouns always ends in
-n.
If the nom. plur. ends in
-n,
of course no
-n
is added. Exceptions are nouns whose plural ends in
-s.
Thus
