Now she was having a baby she planned never to let him see, and she would be gone from his life forever. Nothing to come home to.

A big empty void waited for him.

He watched her, listening to her moan softly in her sleep. He needed to count the days he was down here and decided to fold the corners of the bible pages down. He shook his head and grabbed the juice boxes and water off the tray. Morgana would worry when he didn’t eat. He’d talk her into letting him out and then he’d decide what to do with his crazy pregnant wife.

Morgana woke with a start. She got up to pee. She was doing a lot of that lately. The last thing she felt like doing was going to the basement, but she couldn’t deny that the tray needed to be cleaned. She watched Raven lying on his bunk shirtless with his hair in waves from his braid. He must have used the comb, and damn, he looked hot. His eyes were closed and he had a slight smile on his lips.

Morgana frowned. Why the hell would Raven be smiling? He was supposed to be miserable. She looked at him and rage consumed her. She flipped the movie back on and wiped the smile off his face. The sounds of a whip cracking filled the room as she headed to the kitchen.
I’ll confuse that smug prick
, she thought, as she made him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He didn’t have a clue what time of day it was and now it was time to start those mind games Lana had explained to her. She needed to understand the damn remote controls better, too. She wasn’t going to listen to these sex movies.

She stopped by the bedroom and found Raven on the screen with his shirt over his face and laughed. He didn’t like his entertainment, either. Oh well. She turned it off so she could speak to him as she brought a clean tray downstairs.

The moment she tossed a power bar on the tray, she got an idea. Walking into the basement bathroom, she grabbed an aspirin, then used a hammer from his work bench to smash it up and dust the bar with it.
Let’s let him wonder what that taste is
, she told herself.

She pulled the old tray away without saying a word and replaced it with the new one. He could drink water with his sandwich. She looked at her app on her phone and noted that he wasn’t getting up to get his food. She pushed the button on the intercom.

“Raven, lunch. Get your food. I have things to do today. If you don’t come get it now, you can go hungry.”

“Morgana, where the hell did you get such a fucked-up movie? I can’t eat watching this shit. You know, though, when I get out of here, since you seem to like them, I can whip you.”

He sounded a bit too smug for her liking, and she felt anger sweeping through her body.

“You don’t know what happens if and when you leave the cell, Raven. Maybe I’ll get a new ol’ man and let him raise our baby and I’ll never let him know you’re down here. Jinx always had a thing for me. I bet even if I told him you were here, just to be with me, he’d go along with it. After all, he’s always wanted what you had.” She let those words sink in for a moment. “Now grab your food, Raven. I’ve got things to do and a party to welcome True back. It really is too bad you won’t be there.”

Of course, she was lying her ass off; there wasn’t a party for True until the weekend but Raven didn’t know that.

Raven grabbed his food and growled, “If I find out you’ve been with another man, with my kid baking in your belly, I’ll kill both of you. I’ll get out, Morgana, it’s just a matter of time before you fuck up. Or until Whistler needs this cell. We’ve got enemies and he uses it, too.”

She shook slightly. It hadn’t occurred to her that the cell might be needed. Shit, fuck, and damn. He had a point.

But she refused to show any fear or doubt. “True is sending Whistler to find Marianne. He wants her back and nobody else knows about the cell. You’re so fucked, Raven. Utterly fucked. Maybe I could just give Jinx some head and you can watch. After all, blow jobs aren’t cheating, right?”

With that, she turned the intercom off, grabbed the two trays, and headed up the stairs. She washed them and sat at the kitchen table, thinking. Lana could tape herself having sex and they could just use the sound of her giving head. Maybe that would be a plan.

She was so angry. How dare he try to scare her? He’d never wanted a baby and now he was trying to use it to his advantage. Hell, no! Grabbing the ginger ale and fresh package of saltines, she decided to check out some of those DVDs Lana had given her. The current one wasn’t doing the trick. She needed something more hardcore, or maybe she needed to torture him with the sound of water dripping. Raven was OCD about the faucets dripping. Yeah, a sound CD was what he was going to get: a slow drip, drip, drip all night long. She removed the movie, didn’t look at him, and turned the remote to mute. She put on the CD of dripping water and settled on the bed with her Kindle. She turned off the TV and found a book to read. She didn’t want to see Raven and hoped he went crazy hearing the incessant dripping.

The sound of water dripping filled his head. Raven grinned. Morgana knew him too well. He’d count the drips until he fell asleep. He’d do his best to shake her up and piss her off. Thinking of her with Jinx who wanted everything he had, however, made him want to punch the wall. He wouldn’t bother. He’d plot and plan, too.

In the meantime, he’d count the drips until he passed out. He hated the lights in his eyes and rolled up a shirt to cover his face, then pushed it against his ears to try and muffle the dripping sounds. He wondered how long she was going to play this game. His own words came back to haunt him. Once he had told her blow jobs weren’t cheating. She cried and he’d told her to get over it. He wondered if she’d really do it and prayed like hell she didn’t. He started to count, hoping he could get through the night.

Morgana woke up late and ran into the kitchen for some power bars and fruit juice boxes for Raven. She flew down the stairs and opened the slot, shoved them in, and ran back upstairs to get ready for work. She turned off the CD player and let Raven have silence for the day.
No time for a shower,
she decided, then left the house as fast as she could.

Her stomach churned from the morning sickness and thinking about not giving Raven enough food. She was going to have to give notice at the prison and figured today would be as good a day as any. Her baby was not going to be put in danger. This might be the only child she ever had; having a baby at thirty-four was starting late as it was.

She saw the prison loom up in front of her and didn’t want to go inside. She wanted to be at home watching Raven. She wouldn’t have that luxury after she took off. She couldn’t imagine a life without Raven, but she’d be damned if their child would live without a father’s love.

Raven heard the food come through the slot and wondered why Morgana hadn’t spoken to him. At least it was quiet—too quiet—but it beat the dripping bullshit noise. He looked over and saw the power bars were still in their wrappers. She must have been late for work and he grinned. Party for True, indeed. He decided he’d do some pushups. It was something to do and he wanted to stay fit. At first, the silence had been a blessing, but it also got on his nerves. He looked down at a tattoo he had gotten during a dark period in his life:
This Too Shall Pass
. His brother and sister-in-law had been killed in an accident and Jenny had been pregnant.

Maybe that was another reason he decided he wasn’t up for having kids. It had been right after the accident that he’d told Morgana there would be no children. She always said, “This too shall pass,” and the words used to comfort him.

He eyed the bible and wondered if he’d do more than turn the pages down. Maybe he should read it. Time seemed to stop in his cell and he hated it. He wanted to know what time it was in the worst way and Morgana was going to have to talk to him when she got home. Idly, he thought he was being treated against the rules of the Geneva Convention. He laughed at himself and started doing sit-ups. He had never given much thought to being in a cell. Sure, he’d done county time, but this shit was starting to get on his nerves.

He was still kinda shocked Morgana had done this to him. The Morgana he knew wasn’t a mean person, but she could hold her own in a fight. She could argue, but she always thought ahead before speaking. Crazy Lana had to have helped her. He’d fucked up and he was very aware of it. Once, he had been a devoted ol’ man. He thought back to the days before they married and how he used to sneak off to meet Morgana. True had wanted her out of the life, but she put her foot down and had told her brother that Raven was gonna be her ol’ man no matter what. He remembered that day like it was yesterday. Her boot caught True in the knee and her light grey eyes had stared her brother down. They’d gotten his blessing that day. She’d taken him out into the hayloft at her brother’s farm and fucked him until the sun was setting. It had been her way of claiming him, she said, on family property. His cock was getting hard thinking about that day and he was almost ready to jerk himself off when a bag from the local hamburger joint came through the slot in the door.

True’s voice boomed through the intercom. “You still wanna cut your kid outta my sister or fuck my other sister and cut her throat, asshole?”

Raven grinned. “Wanna let me outta here, True? I was pissed off. You know damn well if it was you in here, you’d be saying shit like that, too.” He grabbed a burger out of the paper bag and unwrapped it.
Damn, this tastes so good,
he thought as he sunk his teeth into the greasy roll.

“Fact is, you made threats against all of us, Raven. What the fuck am I supposed to do with you? You’re a killer. You enjoy what you do, and while we appreciate it in the club, I don’t think I can trust you with Morgana. Even if she leaves, which is not an option as far as Whistler and I are concerned, you might find her, and we don’t know what you’d do to her.” True was being straight with him.

“I love her. I know I fucked up and I’m sorry for that. You’ve been away a year now and shit got all messed up. Her shifts changed all the time, and she changed too. Whistler can vouch for that. She had never wanted to come to parties.”

Raven didn’t lie; being honest with True was important.

Whistler, who Raven didn’t realize was there, also had to get his two cents in. “You didn’t help matters, either, or try to fix them, bro. All my sister wanted was a baby. To get one, she had to trick you. You’ve been with her ten fucking years. You and Morgana had a real relationship, a marriage. Bros looked up to you and the other ol’ ladies respected my sister. You took all of it away from her. For what? Getting sucked off by some foulmouthed slut? We were best friends. We grew up together. I trusted you with my sister!”

The pain and hurt in his voice echoed through Raven’s head. It was all the truth, and it stabbed him in his heart.

Raven chewed slowly as the words settled in his mind. The North brothers were a force to be reckoned with. He’d wind up with a bullet to his head if he wasn’t honest with them. He did love Morgana, though, and he wanted out of the cell.

“True, what time is it? I’ve been in here not knowing the time and it sucks.” He grabbed another burger.

“Morgana didn’t give you a clock, huh? Sucks to be you, bro. Time doesn’t matter. We decided to let Morgana keep you down here until we work out a plan or she does. You’re gonna have to hand us the trash back. If baby sister knows we visited, we won’t get our steak dinners.”

Apparently, True wasn’t gonna tell him what time it was.

“Raven, we got word that the Filthy Fiends are looking for you,” added Whistler. “It seems they heard that you’re on the road, which means somebody is talking. Got any idea who that could be?”

“I didn’t tell anyone but Morgana,” Raven said back. “You sprung it on me suddenly. My guess would be one of the sluts. I don’t think any of the bros are rats. Y’know, I’d really like to be outta this cell in case any of them come here. I’m sure they know my house.” Raven balled up the wrappers and put them in the bag, then pushed it through the slot to the brothers. The thought of Morgana facing the wrath of a club they were at war with made his gut churn in fear for her. “Who you got watching my house? Motherfuckers, let me out of here. If something happens to her, blame yourselves. Her and Lana aren’t safe at the prison, either. If you won’t let me out, convince Morgana to leave her job for Christ’s sake.”

True put a finger to his lips and took Whistler aside. “You know, he’s right,” he said low enough so Raven couldn’t hear. “This is bullshit. I believe Raven isn’t gonna hurt Morgana, but it has to be up to her. I promised her.”

Whistler cursed. “I told you it was fucked up. We need to convince her to let you stay here.”

“Hey, fuck that. You made this deal with her,
you
stay here.”

“No way.”

“If I thought we could let him out now, I would. You got your key on you?”
