“You knew I wanted to have any kids of mine completely planned, not like this, just to happen along? We were only about to move in together.” He was so unsure.
“Jay, I didn’
t do this deliberately. I was as shocked as you are.” She tried to move but a contraction sent her into a grimace. She moaned slightly and gently began to sob. She was losing her baby.
Pulling her into his arms, he breathed in the smell of her hair. Her hair always smelled so good. He kissed her and whispered softly.
“I love you.” He meant it. He loved her so much.
Driving back to Damon
’
s place, Jay was very quiet. He had so damn much to absorb. Did it happen like she said it did, or was it that when she came back from Crete, after he had gone back to LA, that she fucked her ex and got pregnant?
Didn
’
t he tell him, the day in the city, that she
’
d bang anything? He sighed. How was it, that all the women he tried to have a relationship with, ended up fucking around?
“Damon, you obviously know what’
s going on. Do you believe her?” Jay asked his friend; still looking out the window watching the trees and the hedge rows pass by as if they were racing with the mighty power of the car.
“She told me. I’
ve known her a little longer than you, I
’
ve seen her during the time you first met and you didn
’
t call her. She was cut up over that.” He glanced over at him. “James, she
’
s not like any of the girls you
’
ve had before.” Damon carefully called him by his real name, something Jay hadn
’
t heard in almost twenty five years. “She does love you, you know. I certainly don
’
t believe that this ex of hers is in her life.”
“Why didn’
t she report it then?” Jay asked. This was the part of her story that seemed to fall apart for him. This guy assaulted her badly but she didn
’
t report it? Why? “Have you seen him around? Do you know where he lives?” Looking at him, Damon
’
s expression changed.
“James, don’
t do anything stupid.” Jay laughed and slapped him on the knee.
“Man, if that kid is mine, that fucking bastard tried to get rid of it, you think I’
m going to let that go?” He would ask for a scan to try and get exact dates and if it were to within the week of he being with her in Crete, then he would fucking kill him.
Nick and Lisa were making some lunch when they got back. Nick went over to him and asked:
“What did the bitch want?” Jay grabbed him and pushed Nick back until he was lying with his back on the table.
“Don’
t fucking go there man. Don
’
t go there.” He left the room. Nick got up and shouted after him.
“Fuckin psycho!” Lisa immediately went over to Nick but Damon said angrily.
“Nick, you’
re an asshole.” He stared at him.
“Of course you always take that psycho junkie’
s side.”
“You have no idea, you self absorbed prick,” and turning to Lisa, he said. “She’
s your friend; she needs you now more than ever and you
’
re here with this asshole that couldn’t give a damn about you.” Lisa
’
s expression changed from concern for Nick to anger. “Yeah go on, Samantha is losing her baby; her and Jay
’
s and you two are just piling on the pressure to harass that poor girl. Shame on you!” Tears welled up in Lisa
’
s eyes.
“How dare you-”
“How dare I? Are you really that desperate to be his groupie that you turn your back on your best friend? Some friend you are.” He walked out.
Jay went back to the hospital to visit Sam, she was sleeping. He sat beside her in the chair; stroking her hand gently with his thumb. The doctor from earlier came in and smiled at him. She said:
“It’
s good for her, having you here. I understand you
’
re not her husband?” Jay looked at her. He stood up and said to the doctor.
“Can I have a word out here?” He walked out into the corridor. With his back to the window, he looked at the doctor and said. “Can you do a scan to determine the date she got pregnant?” Dr. Mallon looked at him and cleared her throat.
“You mean you’
re not the father? Or you don
’
t think you are?” She took off her glasses.
“I don’
t know what the fuck I mean.” He hit his hand off the wall. “Look, I
’
m hearing lots of shit. Can a scan tell to within a week when the kid was conceived?” Dr. Mallon went over to him. He was a very attractive man, if somewhat rude.
“You need a paternity test,” she said gently.
“Don’
t tell me what the fuck I need. I need damn answers. No one seems willing to fucking give me.”
“Calm down. Sam needs you to be strong for her. I’
m sending her home tomorrow. She doesn
’
t need this stress.” Jay looked at her. He hated doctors, especially after rehab, full of their own self-importance.
“Doc, with due respect; can a scan tell, Yes or No?” His hand went up to his forehead. He needed a hit.
“Yes to within a week or so.” She touched his arm gently. “You need to ask her to agree to this, are you sure you want to go down that road?”
Fuck!
He was hung over too.
“Yes; her ex husband told me the kid was his, I assumed it was born, now I find out earlier today it could be mine.” He laughed sarcastically. “What the fuck would you do Doc?” Jay knew he sounded vulgar but he didn’
t care right now. All he wanted to know was if that kid was his or not. She smiled and told him she
’
d be back in a bit.
Sam was awake when he went back in the room. She smiled when she saw him. He looked so handsome.
“Sam, I want to ask you something.” He said as he sat down. “Will you agree to have another scan? I need to know if this kid is mine.” She stared at him. He didn’
t believe her. How could he think she
’
d sleep with Dan, knowing how much she loved him? But her rational side told her, he needed to be sure, after what Dan had said to him and what Brandi had done to him. Tears welled up in her eyes.
“Yes, but I don’
t expect anything from you Jay.” She managed to keep her voice steady. “You can have the scan; if the baby survives and you want to be in its life you can, but I don
’
t want anything from you.” She turned her head away. Jay swore and sat down on the bed.
“Do you know what you put me through? Do you have any idea?” He hissed at her. She looked into his eyes. All she could see was pain and love. Gone was the hatred of the previous night.
“I didn’
t do anything wrong. All I did was fall in love with you.” The Doctor coughed in the doorway. Jay stood up and went to the window as she came in.
“Samantha, there has been a concern raised by this gentleman,” she looked over at Jay. “If you agree, I’
ll do a scan.” She was being diplomatic. Sam nodded. “Ok!” The doctor got a wheelchair and brought them down to the scan room and helped Sam onto the couch.
Jay took a deep breath and tried not to look at her as the doctor pulled up the hospital gown and he caught a glimpse of her very full breast. She looked so damn hot. He had to think of something else. He was getting hard.
The doctor put gel on Sam
’
s tummy and put the scanner over her stomach. The translucent shape of what looked like an alien appeared on the screen. A tear fell from Sam
’
s eye as she saw her baby. It had its thumb in its mouth. She laughed.
The doctor typed in something and explained that the measurement would indicate to within five days, the date of conception.
“Ok, you want to know, folks?” Jay nodded. “It’s somewhere between the twenty first and twenty fourth of April.” She looked at Jay; who was looking at the screen when the baby moved a leg.
“Will it be ok Doc?” He asked. She touched his arm.
“I will do everything I can to make sure the little one is.” She smiled at Sam. “Are those dates the ones you wanted to hear?” Jay looked at Sam, he knew that
demanding this had hurt her but he had to know.
“That’
s my baby Doc; you do everything you can to save it.” They helped Sam back onto the chair and Jay wheeled her back to the room in silence.
She sat on the bed beside him, without saying a word. It was Jay who broke the silence.
“Sam, please…I had to be sure babe.” He reached for her hand. “I love you and I felt hurt.” She turned to look into his eyes. If she were in his shoes she’
d have done the same.
“I would never hurt you; I love you too damn much.” He pulled her into his arms. What an ass he’
d been. He almost lost her and his child. “But Jay, there is something else.” He kissed her cheek; “After this, I won
’
t be able to have any more children.” Jay released her. His expression changed.
“What do you mean?” He demanded. “Sam, what do you mean?” She looked into his eyes.
“The assault was so severe, it damaged my womb. That’
s why I
’
m having these problems.” He stood up and cupped her face in his hands and kissed her deeply. She felt so good.
“Where does he live?” He asked. She looked at him. “Sam, where does the bastard live?” He was losing his patience.
“No Jay, he’
s not worth it. Please!” She begged. He kissed her cheek and put his hand on her tummy. The baby kicked. He smiled.
“That’
s my kid he tried to kill. And you are my kid
’
s mother. I
’
m going to kill the bastard.” He kissed her on the head and walked out as the nurse was coming into the room.
